Icons disappeared from desktop!

I have just installed a piece of software onto my Windows 2000 machine. I was supposed to install this in a certain directory but I couln't find it so using my initiative installed it in another folder (which I later found out was the wrong one!!)
After installing my icons have disappeared off my desktop and from my start menu, even though the folders all still seem to be there in Program Files. Is there any way I can recover my desktop and Start Menu?
Please help...I would really appreciate it!!

You can use X-teq X-setup to rebuild your icons. Just do a google search for Xsetup. or windows 2000 tweak utility.

Yes this software can be removed fine.

So uninstalling it doesn't restore you desktop/start menu?
Have all icons disappeared from these 2 locations or just selected. Are there any other users set up on machine - are they similarly affected?

Have a look under documents and settings folder - your profile folder & All Users profile folder. Can you see any entries in C:\Documents and Settings\<profilename>\Desktop or C:\Documents and Settings\<profilename>\Start Menu\Programs.

If all shortcuts actually removed from all these locations (ie, check all users), you'll probably have to recreate them manually (you could get copy of the normal windows ones from another machine, and just add ones for your your apps).

Also right click on the desktop goto active desktop and make sure the check mark to show all icons is marked if you are using active desktop.
