I have windows XP and windows Vista networked and they only work if I have both my FIREWALLS turned OFF and I don't feel safe is there a way to configure the F/W and keep them ON, also I can't see the Vista computer icon on the XP but can see the XP computer icon on the Vista computer. Instead of the windows firewall consider using zonealarm. Assuming you have static IPs (or an IP range for your local network) you can add just those to a trusted zone. Then the two computers talk like there is no firewall, while still providing the protection of a firewall from everything outside the trusted zone.

Which firewalls are you using and turning off, are they the Windows firewall?

"Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" (only Vista I think).

Have a look at the Winsock Fix in this FAQ, the Netsh command works for Vista too.

linney/jaxtell, Thx guys, my apologies I should have mentioned that I do not use the windows firewall and they are always OFF but I do use the Norton Protection Center F/W(ver 15.0.0.60)

Linney - I can see the XP on the Vista it's the other way around but thx.

PRPhx - Yes I am able to ping the Vista from the XP and also am able to share files but just can't see it's icon on the workgroup computers so I am not sure if I am connected to Vista until I try sharing files, Thx.

IF your IP address are not static, try shutting down both pc's and your router. Then restart the router. Let it initialize. Then turn on the pc. Once they've booted, open a command prompt and type: ipconfig /release and press enter. Then type ipconfig /renew and press enter. This should renew your ip addresses. You might also type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter.

Also ensure that both machine have identical users and credentials.
