Hello

I have an IBM ThinkPad T43 connected to a docking stating, which has DVI output amongst other connections. Each of my four machines is connected to a Avocent DVI switch, with DVI cables.

My problem is with the laptop as it rarely recognises the external display. When the lid is shut it should divert video to the external port on the docking station - in this case the DVI connector - but it works about 1% of the time. When it does work there is no logical reason as to why.

The laptop has the latest drivers, etc, etc and it works fine if I use a non DVI switch.

Does anyone know how to make the display always default to the DVI output when the lid of the laptop is closed? When the lid is closed the laptop does not go in to standby or shutdown, so it's trying to do something, but I'm guessing it's defaulting to the VGA port and not the DVI.

Thanks

Sorry, just realised there is a 'PC Hardware - Video Issues' forum, but any help appreciated.

If it is a Targus or lenovo USB docking station you need to install the software and configure the second monitor as mirror, extend desktop or external monitor by clicking the icon in the tray.

If this is a true docking station with a multi-pin connection then make sure all your contacts are clean and connected and properly aligned. My experience w/ docking stations has not been the best, I carry a toothbrush around to keep the contacts clean. Once the bag of Silica Gel ruptured and I had a collection of crystals in my multipin...not Fun!
