the system would completely freeze once it get to the "vtrl-alt-del" screen. the laptop is running on win nt 4.0 sp1.
i can't by this part to do anything. i like to get by this to reinstall sp3,4,5. have anyone had this problem before with windows nt 4 and ibm laptop.

thanks

While it might be true that some manufacturers have devices that work better this is probably not just an IBM issue. Aside from the "do over" suggestion to verify it isn't something in the install process I have seen situations where the device would not allow mouse & KB to work based on two things. Totally wrong mouse/KB drivers which usually are not installed by NT but after the fact. A USER password in the CMOS with or without the Supervisor CMOS password. The device boots without asking for the USER CMOS password and since it wasn't entered you don't have rights to use it when you get to the login screen.
Newer IBM laptops use F1 while booting quite like a desktop does. Older IBM laptops require one to hold down the F1 key and then turn on the laptop. Eventually it gets to the CMOS. I would delete both the Supervisor and User passwords to make sure environment is clean. Just asking to reset CMOS to Defaults may not do the trick.
Hope this helps.
