Hello!
Heres my prob, My system will not detect my IBM Desktar 75gig(sounds like it will not spin no loud noises). I have changed out IDE cables with my Cd drives but to no avail. I checked my IDE cable that was connected to my HD and it seems to work. I have not opened the case in a while before this, but it has been pretty hot where I have been. Does anyone know of a fix? Is there a way to physicall fix the Harddrive I need the help! I thank you in advance.

Is this a new drive your trying to install? have you used it previously in this computer?

Make sure your bios settings are set to autodetect. Checked all jumper settings?

Yes this Drive has been working well for a month with WinXP on it.

Auto Detect is on and all of the Jumpers are correct

Was there any noticeable problems when you last used your comp? Such as files not opening or any errors that might have indicated the HD was going?

Usuallly if the HD is going out, you will know well before hand. The primary IDE controller may be causing the problem. Do you have another known good HD to try out in the comp?. or and IDE add on card spare?

I wouldn't try physically opening up a HD unless your perfectly sure on what to do. If theres valuable data etc.., you may want to take it to a store who specialises in it.

Hope you get the problem sorted

no unfortunely I do not have a spare HD to try out. Also I did not have any problems until I booted into XP and it could not respond(I just added a blastermaster patch)
I do not have an IDE add on card what are they? a pci card to add another IDE port? Do you think this may work?

You need to see if your motherboard is still detecting your hard drive (it should be set to auto in the BIOS). If it doesnt show up when the motherboard is detecting the drives, then the drive is probably dead (as you say that it had been working previously) unless the settings or cabling were modified from when it was working. If the cables have been changed you need to check that 1.power supply cable is plugged in 2. the IDE cable is plugged in correctly (red line to pin one on drive, and on motherboard) also with the drive being on the end adapter of the cable, and 3. the drive jumpers are correct (some drives require a different setting for master by itself vs master with slave present).

If it shows up when the motherboard is detecting the drives then the data on it has probably been scrambled. Depending on how bad you may be able to get Windows XP to recover the system for you - otherwise the data can often be recovered with the correct programs but is quite time consuming. If the data isnt so important you should be able to format and start again.
