i use vc++ (mfc). can any1 tell me the header file of the class IActiveDesktop (and does it comes along with standard vc++ installation?). also how can i refresh the desktop window (using api calls) plz help!!!.

The header is Shlobj.h. and you will be linked against shell32.dll

I think that you will have to call the ApplyChanges method of this interface to refresh your desktop.
