I Need to restore a single mailbox from an information store backup

What is the best way to restore the single mailbox from an information store backup?. I was thinking of building another exchange server strickly for restore cases like this one. but I don't want to join the existing site or organization. Is that possible?

I don't think you can unless you restore using a brick level back up

you can do it, but it's a bit of a pain. Build your new Exchange server. When you install Exchange, give it the same org and site name as your original, but DON'T join the site. Make sure you create the data directory structure exactly as you did on the original. Bring it up to the same service pack level. Once it's installed, stop the services. Move the mdbdata directory somewhere else. Start the Directory and System Attendant services. Restore the mdbdata directory from your backup to this new server. Start the IS service. Open exchange admin and run the DS/IS consistency adjuster, choosing to to correct all inconsistencies. Once that's done, you should see all of your recipients. Open an outlook client and point the user profile at this new server with the appropriate user ID/mailbox that you want to retrieve. Extract all the info to .PST , manually recreate the user mailbox on your production server, open it, and move all the data from the .PST file to this mailbox. OK, now, one thing. I've done this several times and sometimes it goes as smoothly as I've jsut described , but there's been occasions where I've had to run ESEUTIL to bring the priv.edb into a consistent state, just so you know....Good Luck!

sorry, Correction. I've sometimes had to run ISINTEG -patch , not ESEUTIL after doing this procedure. I was thinking of a server restore...

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service terminated with service-specific error 87.

I restored the priv.edb using arcserve and the is still wouldn't start. I tried a few things and now I'm getting the above error. any ideas?

Hey cj, well in that case you'll probably need to run the ESEUTIL tool first with the consistency check switch (/mh), and then , if inconsistencies are reported, you can try a soft repair (/r). If that doesn't work , you may need to go with the hard repair (/p). Afterwards, run the ISINTEG -PATCH again...If you don't get inconsistencies in the beginning, try running ISINTEG in test/fix mode. I believe the syntax is "ISINTEG -pri -fix test alltests".

all seem to work now. I really didn't care about the pub.edb I just trashed it ( I used the newly created one when I built the new server) then ran isinteg -patch a few times and deleted one registry key and that's all it took.

thans a lot for your previous posts brontosaurus. In fact I know I how to get it up and running so well that I had to run another restore because the user was on the wrong server I got it up and running in no time once I ran the eseutil /p.
