I have a computer that the modem messed up on and I am wanting to install a new one. The only problem is I have only one PCI slot on the motherboard. I have my sound card installed in that slot. The modem that is messed up I cannot find anything like it. It is a smaller card that does not fit in any slot. It has a port on the bottom of it that plugs into a row of 8 pins that are on the motherboard. Can anyone assist me as to what type of modem this is and where I can locate one?

Thanks

Hello Marcusmay,
Is this an older Packard Bell? What about using an
external modem through the serial port.

Whatever you have, it was made to fit your motherboard , or your motherboard was built to fit the modem, and it is unlikely you can find a replacement from any but the people that made the motherboard. Or by buying a surplus computer on ebay.
You didn't mention ISA slots. Do you have any available? And have you gone into the BIOS to see if you can disable whatever ports drive the broken modem?

3Com (USRobotics) makes a great, rock-solid connecting external serial modem. These are nearly flawless in my area with lots of rural connections. They can handle line noise very well. Plus, they will connect to any computer with a serial port.
for details...

The test continues...

Thank y'all for the assistance. I do have an ISA slot, but the ISA slot is right next to the PCI slot and the PCI cards take the opening on the back of the computer right below it. The ISA cards are designed to take the opening right above the slot. Y'all probably do not understand what I am saying. But that is the problem I am facing.

Yeah, it is called a shared slot. And now you are paying the price for a machine designed for the "loss leader" category.
The ususal answer for your problem is "buy a new computer". The alternative is "get a replacement M/B & modem".
Both are too expensive and lead you to the same mistake.

Mainegeek and pudda have the better answer if you have a serial port. I would have suggested the same, after first suggesting an ISA hardware modem.

In any case, your next computer should be more expandable. And look to see what special "ticking time bombs" are built in.

Before you buy an external modem make sure you can disable the onboard one first. Otherwise you will need a newer computer.

Another option would be one of those older MWAVE modems with the sound card and modem combined. They were finicky and the sound cut out sometimes when connecting. IBM use to use these in P133 computers.

Thanks for the help. The computer is just one I was trying to help someone out by upgrading it and ran into this problem. I appreciate y'all's help and will probably have to get an external modem.
