Subnettig newbie so be gentle.
I need create a new dhcp to replace the old that has run out of ip addresses. We are using 192.168.1.0 with 255.255.255.0 as the mask.

Any advice on what the new subnet should so we don't run into this again? I guess I would like to have around 1000 available address to be safe.

With this IP scheme, you can only have 256 nodes (hosts) per subnet (including network and broadcast addresses). So you won't be able to fit all of your requested (1000) nodes using this address scheme.

You could change your subnet mask from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.0.0 and increase the number of hosts per network dramatically. This IP scheme will give you over 65,000 nodes per network.

Here is a good resource:

i can use that mask with the same ip scheme or should I change to a 10.0.0.0 setup?

You can keep scheme...just change the subnet mask.
