Hi there
i have a small network setup, 10 terminals and a server. They are all running Win2k pro. My problem is this :

1. The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{8F4B66D5-C796-4032-BE21-8EB5636339A4} because a master browser was stopped.

2. The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{8F4B66D5-C796-4032-BE21-8EB5636339A4} because a Windows 2000 Server (or domain master) browser is started.

3. The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer TERMINAL-5 that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{8F4B66D5-C796-403. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

These msgs get loged in to eventlog in that order. After the last msg the network is not working at all
Can anyone please help me with this or at least explain the meaning of this :(

Poor network, all your pc's are playing the game of poker - or master browser elections. Basically, the way this works is as follows; a master browser is the computer that compiles the list of available network resources, if they are fighting it out or if the machine in question can't see the master browser then you may not be able to see any network shares, etc. The Master Browser is normally the server (win 2000 server) because they have more power over win 2000 pro machines (a win98 would have more power over a win 95 machine and so on).
The best thing to do is go into the registery of each machine (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser. )
and change all machines to NO in the param Maintain server list and make sure the param ISDomainMaster is set to FALSE. Then go into the same reg key on the server and set Maintain Server list as YES and this will make it the master browser (as it should be).

Then you'll need to restart computer browser in services on all machines methinks, then start a browser election from the command prompt and I forget the syntax...hmm, I'll have to come to back to you on that one...I think you can just restart the computer browser service on each machine after changing reg key, and that should do the trick.

Hello the syntax would be

net stop browser
net start browser

Good day

You'll also want to go into services on each workstation and on computer browser change them to disabled after you've stopped them. I had the same problem and I almost pulled my hair out figuring it out. Glen A. Johnson

Almost forgot, don't need to restart, if you're a member of a domain, just logoff and logon will take care of it. Glen A. Johnson

If you have multiple DC's do you make the registy change on the server that has the FSMO roles or can you do it on any DC?
