I need data from old hard drive with me

My old laptop had monitor and key board prblems so I removed the hard drive and recycled the rest.Can I get something to read and or use the programs on the hard drive?

TomCologne, would I be able to run the hard drive as a seperate system? also can I put the hard drive into an external case and use it from my new laptop?

Unless the hardware in your new laptop is (almost) identical to the old one, I doubt you'll be able to boot from this drive.

You can't copy over most applications - you need to run the installation programme from the CD. Some of the older DOS type applications could just be copied over and work ok. But you should be able to copy across your data files...

Cheap as chips but more more useful: a 2.5inch external hard drive caddy and yes it can be used off a USB port to extract those important saved files and as backup/extra storage.

There is another way, shunned by many (including me), but it should work. Place this old hard drive in your new machine. Boot to your Windows CD and do an In-Place Install, sometimes called a Repair Install, using the second Repair option, then visit Windows Update to bring the machine current. There will be a lot of cruft left behind but the old apps should work.
