Hello,

I have a toshiba laptop, I currently am at a point where my 98 installation will halt at the windows 98 screen when it trys to load the operating system. I have tried to boot in safe mode, That brings up a two errors, First > conctl32.dll is either corrupt or could not be found. Second > Explorer.exe has errors, PLease reinstall windows. After I close these errors the system will restart. I think maybe a virus had infected os files. I need to somehow reinstall 98 without a reformat.... and without loosing registry information for system program to remain operational. If you have any suggestions for recovery please tell all..... Thank You everyone For the HELP!

First see if you have a Virus. Use a BOOT disk and start in DOS mode. Run a scan on your HD to see if you have a virus.
If not then your windows needs to be re-installed.
BOOT in dos mode and rename the win.com file to anthing
then re-install windows. When the setup asks you which folder to use make sure you specify the Windows folder. This will re-install all the necessary files but leave you setting as they were. This does not allways work, it depend on how badly your windows is damaged. If the registry is corrupted this procedure will not work

So I would need to replace the new win.com file in order to retrieve original settings on the system? and the windows folder I choose for re install is the same as current os?

If your computer ever booted. I would try booting with a win98 startup disk. Then at the command prompt type scanreg/restore (maybe \ dont remmeber). Anyway restore an old registry (most current one that sucessfuly loaded). This could possibly repair this problem.
