Hey,
I am new to this forum. Here is my situation. I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows 98. (dell, 500 meg Pentium III, 128 ram, 20 gig hd)
I also bought a new cd burner and a new modem.

Here are my many problems.

1. The burner is recognized by the computer, but when I try to run the installation disk for the modem I get the following error message:
"setup.exe file is linked to missing export oleaut32.dll:173."
(The disk works fine in my XP machine.)

2. When I try to install the burning software, the wizard will start, but then shutdown with the following error code.
"file comct132.dll"

3. The sound card and the network card are not recognized.

I am sure there are multiple driver issues involved here. I downloaded the driver for the modem to a floppy disk, but the computer will not recognize it on the floppy.

Any help you can offer on any or all of the problems would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds like the software was not made for windows 98. What is the name of this burning software? Also what version?

You may be right. The modem is an intel.V.92 from HiRo Inc. It requires 98SE / 2000 / or XP.

I am not sure what the 98SE is. I just have 98.
Thanks.

98se means 98 second edition. See if they have an older driver although 98se still might work on 98.

Windows 98 Second Edition.

Upgrade to Win98SE as it has better support for CD drives, USB ports, etc.

Might do well to download the drivers for the M/B from dell. Installing the drivers that go with a M/B can reduce the problems you have with I/O.

If you have only Win98 initial installation on your computer, go to and scan for updates. Install all critical updates, especially IE6 SP1 (this must be installed first)
It will update many of your system files. Then try to install your drivers.
