I have Windows 2000 server and trying to set up domain

I had to redo the server install from scratch and I made it a domain controller. I was able to install AD, and the other workstations Windows say that they are logging onto the domain. However when I add new PCs, it is completely unable to log onto the domain but able to see the server and access some shared files.
I do not have a static IP address but getting the IP addresses from my ISP provider. Is this part of the problem. Do I need to set up DNS and DHCP from the server itself with static IP address on the router to my ISP provider.

How did you make the server a DC? Did you run DCpromo? If you are running a it as a DC you will have to have DNS setup. Active-Directory requires DNS to work. Hell, its required to set a domain controller. Make sure that you install DNS on your server and have all your workstation have there DNS pointing to your server. You ISP would have nothing to do with it.

i guess you could say that I am a rank amateur. I installed AD and it created a domain which I subsequently used. I never used dcpromo. The DNS works but I am not sure I created the domain correctly. Should I demote it from the domain and try to recreate it.

How are you adding the workstations to the domain? If you are adding the workstations correctly then the Domain Controlloer will promt you for a password to add it. If that is happening then you domain is responding correctly. Make sure you are logging into the domain and locally at the workstation. Next check that you can resolve the name of the server. Try to ping the server by name then ip. Then try to do the same from the workstation pinging the server. If all that works you should have no reason that you would not be able to login to the domain. It doesnt sound like you would need to demote the domain server and promote it again. Also make sure your workstats are running on the same network scheme as the domain.
