I have web site on w2k server, When I do the search
within the LAN the search works fine.  However, when
using the search feature on the outside of the LAN/internet, the results
come up but clicking the link page will get "Action Canceled" error. When
checking the properties of the link, URL shows or
instead of any ideas?

I am stumped on this one, actually. I don't work on the server side of things very much - but would suspect this has something to do with the configuration, maybe, with the indexing service... but I don't see how one would make changes that would correct this.

Have you tried recalculating the hyperlinks on the live site? I would try that first - and then I would post this question on the private frontpage newsgroup if you don't get an answer here. There are at least a couple FP MVPs that work more with the server side of things and could probably tell you right off how to correct this or what the problem is.

That is pretty clever how you put the search in the left frame like that.

Thank you for the help. I did try recalculating. I also tried manay suggestions on MS newsgroup such as tracking, deleting/recreating catalog. I ma waiting for more suggestion and will let you know.

Did you fix this? Or did you notice the difference in the results if you do the search from ? I just tried it from the ip address too and I see that the search results are now displaying the results pointing to pages at the IP address. A search from either or now returns results using the ip address.

I am interested in how you get this resolved, if you care to post it when you get it sorted :)

This is really interesting. So, now I understand how you got the search to work on the IP address or public view of the web - I just don't understand why it worked this way.

I work on local server based copies of several webs that include a search in the web. Publishing from my local copy to the remote host works fine. If I perform a search locally, the results point to local - if I perform a search at the remote http:// of the same web, the search results point correctly using the domain name.

Keeping in mind, that I don't fully understand why your situation and workaround works as it does - I might be inclined to suggest some ideas for further workarounds.

You could continue working on your laptop as you do and make changes to your web and publish them. If you don't make changes to the search page, it shouldn't need to change the working state it is in now. You could also mark your local copy of the web search page to &quot;don't publish&quot;, so that FP won't overwrite the search page in any publish it does. If you needed to make changes to the search page, you could make them on the live copy of the web with FP.

If I were stuck with thsi situation and not able to find a better solution, off the top of my head I might look into maintaining two search pages (if the current workaround creates problems with the links for your LAN viewers). 1. search that works for the LAN viewers, the other like the current page that works for the IP address. Then some kind of JavaScript detection script that when one presses the search/submit button - the script detects the URL the viewer submitted the search from and targets the correct search page accordingly.

Again, keep in mind that I work very little with the server side of things - but I wonder if this is a limitation or problem with the Index server or indexing service. Perhaps this wouldn't be an issue if your site search were utilizing the default (and limited) WAIS Text search engine?

Hopefully some of the above will help at least offer some ideas that help you get this resolved and working correctly for you.
