Please can anyone tell me
A] what some of these do?
B] how I can permanently delete them from running in the background, i.e remove from startup I guess?
C] when my husband edits his video films He uses Pinnacle Studio 7 with its own firewire card we were advised to free up memory[not sure whether they meant RAM I have 256 now] or other by closing down all except Systray and Explorer, BUT
when we do that the computer does not close down so can you also tell me which of these we need to leave on so that the computer can close down properly.
thanks
here is the list in the order they appear

Explorer OK I know this one
Createcd50 this is my EASY CD Creator I think
yPager Is this Yahoo IM stuff
Tbl mouse my tablet mouse I think
Direct CD
Real Player

Wkcalrem
Navapw32

Ok that is the list. I would love to get rid of some, I also am puzzled as to why Direct cd is on there twice Learn something new every day.

Wkcalrem = Microsoft Works Calendar Reminder (don't need it it not using Works Reminder)
Navapw32 = Norton Antivirus
Hpcdtray = Hewlett Packard CD Writer (don't need it if using DirectCD
Real Player = Real Player (not need for this to be running, you can call upon it when needed...it eats up a lot of resources)
Rnaapp = Windows Modem Connection
(read this link about rnaapp -- you may have no problems with it, but if so...)
It's no big deal really, why the CD entries are there multiple times.
They really don't need to be running in the background at all. You really need surprisingly few things running in the background for the pc to work properly.

Go to Start, Run, type in msconfig and OK. Go tothe Startup tab. Uncheck the unncessary things, like the CD entries (DirectCD, CreateCD, Hpcdtray. Also, Real Player and Wkcalrem. This simply ensures that these things do not start when your pc starts.) Click ok to apply and restart pc. Now check your Close Program window.

I'm not sure what is causing you to not shut down properly. What does it do when you try to shut it down under the forementioned conditions? Any error messages?

Try this tip also, just for good measure (especially since I can;t figure out what Vi-grm is...). Go here: Download this freeware, called SPyBot S&D. Run it on your pc and clean off any mal-ware that it might find. Post back and let us know what was found, if anything.

Hi I have SpyBOt, and mailwasher and adawareplus 6
The problem with it not shutting down is jsut that, click on Start
Shut down
Nothing happens.
HAve to press restart then wait for it all to laod up, then close down, so it seems one of those items is causiing it not to shut down.
BTW Just now I wanted to go to lunch[ home worker] wanted to disconnect internet from pC and then log on on my MAc which is downstairs, but I couldnt get it to disconnect. Maybe it was because the email was coming in?

Will run spybot etc. and get back to you.
Cheers

You're likely having rnaapp problems.
Try doing a ctrl+alt+del and killing rnaapp from the Close Window dialog. Shutdown. Does this work?
If not, the link I pasted in my previous post might provide your fix. If not, try:

I know it's kind of nebulous, but perhaps one of these approaches will get you some relief.
