I have a machine that is running Windows 98, Second Edition and all of a sudden the IE quick working, in other words, each time I click on the IE icon nothing happens. I am able to get Instant Messaging to work, but not IE. I am running this PC in a wireless environment as a client to a host machine which has no problem with IE. I thought about trying to reinstall IE but I can't find the CD nor can I get on the internet to download IE. I have all of the latest updates from Microsoft. Any ideas?

Did you try repairing IE in System Information/Tools?

If ski's suggestion doesn't work; try

(hit f8 during startup, or press and hold CTRL....either way, do it right before you'd normally see the Win98 splash logo....toward end of POST)

A- Boot to command prompt
B- type the following, scanreg /restore
C- choose a "started" copy from time before probs. started
D- reboot

Thanks Ski, where do I go to System Information and Tools? Also, when I click on Control Panel/Settings, nothing happens....

You can find System Information by going to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools, and then clicking on Tools/IE Repair Tool.

But if you're also unable to open Control Panel, then use TT4U's suggestion, which may fix things if the problem happened within the last 5 days.

If no luck, or it happened more than 5 days ago, then see if reinstalling Windows over itelf works:

Try this after a scanreg /restore doesn't work and right before re-installing windows over itself as a last shot

Go to Start/Run, and type:
rundll32.exe_setupapi,InstallHinfSection_DefaultInstall_132_%windir%\inf\ie.inf

The above line is too long to fit across this forum display, so I substitiuted a _(underscore) where a BLANK SPACE would be in the command...there's 4 blanks only altogether

Ski,

When I go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools, I have no Tools/Repair Tool. I am running Windows 98/SE.

bisenhower;

"System Information" is there..then TOOLS,etc..

Go Start>Run Msinfo32
OK
This is "System Information", same as ski said; just two diff ways to access it
If it doesn't work. you're missing the MSINFO32.EXE files and directory, which can be installed from the CD if necessary.

Your days are numbered in trying to use Scanreg /restore from a command prompt.....so hurry hurry

TT4U,

Thanks, I found the System Tools and IE Repair; however, I still cannot get onto IE. I tried your Scanreg /restore and that did not work either, messed up to many other settings. I am running IE 6 on this machine. Any other suggestions? I sure do appreciate your input

Blair

DID you run Scanreg /restore in TRUE DOS MODE from the "Command Prompt Only" from the 98 startup menu????
Press and hold CTRL key during POST (Power On Self Test) until the Win98 Startup menu appears..(If you see the win98 Logo you've waited too long, and try again)

Scanreg /restore isn't supposed to mess up you're settings, just take you backwards in time a couple of days..I've a feeling you tried to run it in a DOS prompt box.

My orig. post says 1. Boot to a command prompt

choose a known good config from a few days back....Before (in time) the probs started..

Otherwise;
Copy and Paste this into the Start>Run
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\ie.inf

Bisenhower;
Just in case you had done it correctly;
Go Start>Settings>Folder Options and choose "View" tab and make sure "Show All Files" is selected and "Uncheck"
"hide ext. for known file types" also
....then
...look here C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP
for these file types....click the "Name" bar to view in alphabetical order...or "Type" bar to group them all together
rb001.cab
rb002.cab
rb003.cab
etc...

for a known "Date" that "Precedes" (earlier) than when probs started....you may not have a Good, "early' enough Backup anymore...look at the "dates".
If you see rbbad.cab..that one's no good

When you say "I can't get on to IE"....you mean it still won't open up when you click on it..

Copy and Paste this in Start>Run
"C:\WINDOWS\INTERNET EXPLORER\IEXPLORE.EXE"

Otherwise;
You may have virus....
You may have to Re-install windows like ski said

TT4U,

I did not find EXPLORER.EXE in C:\WINDOWS\INTERNET EXPLORER. I found it in C:\Program Files/INTERNET EXPLORER. Yes, IE will not open up when I click it. Should EXPLORER.EXE be in the WINDOWS directory?

Blair

NOoOOOOOoooOooo!!!
Explorer.exe is Windows Explorer
IExplore.exe is Internet Explorer

LIKE I SAID ABOVE....LOOK CLOSELY it says;
"C:\WINDOWS\INTERNET EXPLORER\IEXPLORE.EXE"

your getting confused

Explorer.exe belongs in C:\WINDOWS
Iexplore.exe belongs in
C:\WINDOWS\INTERNET EXPLORER

If you Copied and Pasted, you wouldn' have this mis-understanding

WHAT HAPPENED TO SCANREG /RESTORE

From earlier;

I guess I am confused. On my good machine, the one I am using now. IEXPLORER.EXE is in C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER and IE works fine. On the bad machine, it is in C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER as well. I cannot cut and paste from the machine to the other machine. Remember, I said I had a two PC network connected via wireless.

I did run run Scanreg /restore in TRUE DOS MODE from the "Command Prompt Only" from the 98 startup menu. Still no good ....
