I have a WIN NT SERVER 4.0 sp5. First thing;
If I have loaded any software or added hardware should I reinstall the service pack??

I have doubled the memory to 1 G and added a few printers etc . I have also brought on line a backup domain controller for another application.

I haven't brought it down lately , but it seems that I should bring it down once a week. Doe s this make sense ?

Exchange 5.5 says to run optimizer to tellit there is more memory .

When I watch perfomance monitor (Task manager) and look at CPU utilization --It jumps to 100% every 4 or 5 grid blocks or about every 10 seconds. I try to see if there are print jobs running, other programs running and it constantly does this. Any ideas ?

Several ideas - install NT4 SP6. Then run Exchange SP4 again. Take a full backup of Exchange server. Then out of hours run the optimiser and assuming everything looks ok, let it make the changes. Ensure that you are running a page file of 64MB more than the amount of RAM and that its on a fast non tolerant disk.

Bounce the server.

Watch for the 100% CPU and look in the process list and see what is taking up the processor power.

Exchange and PDC? Promote the BDC so it'll demote the PDC - should help (your problem could be authentication). Remove the printers and put them on another server (that eats resources). Exchange server should be about the only thing running on a server, especially if you have a fair number of users.

Let us know what happens.

What service pack are you using for Exchange? There was a problem with MSX in that it would occasionally use 100% CPU. This was fixed with the later service packs. I seem to remember it was SP2.

WHat I actually did was to go to control panel, services and shut down exchange. I brought it back up and it cleared up the problem. I saw that store.exe was sucking up all the CPU power. Thanks to all though.
