I have a couple of games that I really enjoy, but I upgraded to windows 2000 and now all I get is the error message "{name of file}.exe is not a valid win32 application"

I have tried using the compatability mode in SPK4 but it doesn't work.

Does anyone have any ideas other than reinstalling 98 or partitioning?

Did you actually upgrade from 98 or do a clean install and reinstall all apps?

If it was an upgrade - have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the games? (Is there any info on the game's websites - if they have one).

I'm presuming they are just win9x games - not dos.

It was a fresh install. And the games are not being developed or patched by the manufacturer.

A bit of common sense here. Some games are designed for Win9x systems (especially older games). They are used to accessing hardware directly. Windows 2000 will under no circumstances allow that. If it won't run in compatibility mode, it might be time for either virtual PC or a dual booting system.

Yeah I'm leaning towards using Virtual Machine, but like I said I'm looking for a solution other than dual booting (partitioning) or going back to win 98.

Yes I know that because of windows 95 & 98 being based on DOS the only way for Microsoft to go forward was really to get rid of the many 95 & 98 problems by just dropping the offending parts for 2000.

I am just hoping that since Microsoft actually attempted to make a compatability mode then some one some where has the answer I'm looking for.

Silly me.

Eon - if compatibility mode not working - probably 2k no good for said games. If you've got access to other 2k machines, could try them there (in case its a hardware rather than 2k issue).

PS - depending how often you run them, its not a big deal running a 98 dual boot (I do this for one pinball game I'm mildly addicted to!).

Wolluf my biggest issue with the dual boot is that the machine is my games machine and as such has the smallest drive in it.

I don't see the point of a dual boot 4GB drive.
That's right 4GB, why? Because I do a whole lot of graphics work on my othe PC so I want to use the larger hard drive I have (120GB) in that one.
Yeah I know why don't I just go buy another drive, well I don't really need another drive and my 4GB is working fine.
I don't want to have my games on my graphics machine mainly because I really can't afford to lose data or have things go wrong on it.

You haven't got another old drive lying around anywhere (I've got a number of old 1-4GB drives I use for test set ups) you could install as slave to put 98 on?
