I can't access my website over the web. Please Help!

Hello All

I have installed Windows 2000 Advanced Server as my Domain Controller.

I am attempting to enable web access to a website I have built using Oracle Portal. Unfortunately IIS cannot be used with Oracle...therefore I have been forced to use an Oracle HTTP server.

Anyway my problem is as follows:

I can access the website on my LAN without any problem. But I would like to be able to access the Portal over the web using a different domain name (

http://www.oracledatabaseconsulting.com).

I have arranged for the domain name to be registered with with the IP address at which the website and the HTTP server reside...and if you enter the domain name on a dial-up connection it appears to attempt to access the IP address on my network but I just get the message 'Page Cannot be found'.

I think it may have something to do with the HTTP server but I'm not sure (I have setup virtual hosts with this server)

But I've been told my DNS/proxy server may not have been configured correctly. I have been told to run nslookup to see if it returns the correct IP address. But it doesn't.

I think I've set up DNS correctly but I think there may be something wrong with this.

I was not able to ping your web server(193.195.222.230) but it appears your DNS is set correctly.

Review all of your dns settings at this link and check to make sure that the right names are associated with the right ips.

Thanks for the responses. I believe the problem is a related to my Routers configuration.

Although I have the domain name pointing to a public IP address in my range I think I need to register it with my router and get my router to route the HTTP request to my Apache server (wher I have my Oracle Poratl website)

Yes you would want to forward all traffic from your public ip on port 80 to your internal servers ip.

I have a netgear router does anyone know if it is possible to have fixed IP (public) addresses on my network. I have been assigned a range of IP addresses by my ISP.

I have been advised that I must have private IP addreses on my network but a public registered IP address on my router. Then use NAT to route requests (e.g. http requests) to the pc IP where I have my http server.

(I must have fixed have fixed IP addresses on my network as I am running Oracle software which requires fixed IP addreses)

You can aasign one of the public ips that the ISP gave you and assign that to your netgear routers WAN port. Then assign a private ip to the ethernet port that connects to your network. You would then set up the nat route (for port 80 for the web) from your public ip to your servers private ip.

Is there any chance I can email you to ask you questions about the router configuration. There are various settings I'm not too sure about. I have tried calling Negear but there is a 30-50 min phone queue for their support.

The reason ask if I can email you is that I would like to let you know my IP address range so you can answer my questions easier. I'm not sure it's a good idea listing public IP addresses on a forum?
