I can see only 3 GB of 4 GB main memory 1

Hi,

I have 4 GB of main memory (I can see this data in BIOS settings). But in Windows task manager 3,2 GB.

What should I do to see the remaining 1 GB of memory.

My system: windows 2003 standard edition

Check the boot.ini for the /3gb switch - which reserves additional memory for the Windows system.
Try adding the /PAE switch (and reboot) - this may help.

Otherwise, it could be a raid controller using the memory... what is the server make/model? have you tried asking your supplier?

Hi,

I have added /PAE switch (without /3gb switch) to boot.ini file and reboot. This has solved my problem. Now I can see 4GB in task manager and also in my computer general tab.

That isn't what /3GB does. It changes the ratio of virtual memory from a 50/50 kernel mode/user mode split to a 25/75 kernel mode/user mode split.

Hello Nick,

I have a similar problem. I have IBM Xseries 336 Type 8837 and have installed Windows 2003 Standard edition on it.
It was working fine with the 2GB of RAM but recently I have upgraded the machine to 4GB of RAM (8X512MB).

I am running into a similar situation as Grofaty did.
The OS sees it as 3.2GB in total.

There is a on board Server Raid controler, should this device be causing the problem?

Do I still need to use the /3GB option?
Is there other way around to resolve this type of situation?
Why is it that Windows 2003 Standard edition is having this type of problem?

Read the page linked to by mlichstein . No, dont use the /3gb switch. Doesnt work with standard edition anyway.

Er, actually, you shouldn't even use the /pae switch unless you have > 4gb ram.
