I am unable to join my client W2K PCs to local Domain. I
have a single Domain Controller and it is running DNS. I
am able to ping my DC using both IP and FQDN. I cannot see
the Domain Name when I browse my Network Places. I can
join any Workgroup I create on the LAN with this client.

From the DC, I can ping the client using IP address, but
not with its FQDN. I also can ping IP addresses and FQDN
on the internet. In the Properties of the TCP/IP, the
Preferred DNS server is 127.0.0.1 (loopback adaptor).

Any help is appreciated.

Try changing the IP address for DNS from 127.0.0.1 to the actual IP address Vince Grice

Agree with Vgrice. 127.0.0.1 is the loopback adapter not the DNS IP Address. Find out what your DNS IP address of your Domain Controller is and then change it from 127.0.0.1 to whatever the IP Address is.

I have changed the IP address of the Primary DNS Server, and I'm still having the problem.

Default gateway on the clients pointing to the server.

Well you still have something defined wrong somewhere. Why don't you list your Domain Controllers TCP/IP settings, and your Windows2000 Pro TCP/IP settings (Be discreet of course). Are you obtaining an IP Address automatically or are you using static IP? Do you have a DHCP server setup on your DC? Every bit of information you can list from your network settings on your DC and your workstations and how you have your network setup will help this forum. Otherwise we are just guessing just like you.

Here's some more information about my network. I have a D-Link DI-804 router/DHCP server/gateway. My cable modem is connected directly into the D-Link unit. My clients are using DHCP and my server is using fixed IP.

Client TCP/IP info:

Host name: ws1
WINS: not enabled
Gateway (D-Link): 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Primary DNS Server: 192.168.100
Secondary DNS Server: 144.211.144 (a random internet DNS)
NetBIOS Disabled (have tried both enabled and disabled)

DNS TCP/IP info:
Host name: server1
WINS: not enabled
Gateway (D-Link): 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Primary DNS Server: 192.168.100
NetBIOS Disabled (have tried both enabled and disabled)

Your primary DNS server address is missing an octet. The primary DNS server on all machines and your server itself should be pointing to your DCs ip address. You will also want to keep netbios over tcp/ip enabled on all machines.

Maybe you're overlooking something obvious. Let's try and track down where the problem is: Your workstation or your DC.

From the workstation, click "start", then "search", then "Files or Folders". Then on the left side, at the bottom under the heading "search for other items" select "computers". The type in the network name of your DC. If the machine is found, and shows up in the list, then double-click on it and see if it opens, or if it gives you some other message such as "too many users".

Let us know what happens why you try this so that we have a bit more information to work with here.
