Hyperlinks to Virtual Directory don't work 1

I have a blog that is set up as a virtual directory of my main site.

...clickin on a hyperlink to the blog doesn't work, but if I take the exact same URL and paste it into the address bar and click Go, the site comes up. In the log the hyperlink hit is recorded as a 404.

What I've done:

Made sure the hyperlink is correct (as I say if I just paste the link address into IE's address bar then I can go to the blog)

Made sure that the virtual directory spsblog has default content enabled and that default.aspx is in the list (even if the hyperlink points directly to the default.aspx such as it doesn't work).

Made sure that the permissions are correct (here again, just pasting the url into the address bar causes the page to be served up fine - the problem is with the hyperlinks)

At first I thought it was just me that was running into this, some kind of messed up IE setting with urlmon.dll or something, but others appear to be seeing the same thing. If you open up a new IE window and then cut-n-paste the links above into the address bar and hit go, you should get to the content fine, but via a hyperlink it appears to be broken.

Anyone got any ideas what is causing this? It should be noted that everything worked fine until like 2 weeks ago (give or take). So I suspect an upgrade or something on the part of MS. Machine is Win2k3 using IIS 6.

Do you have anything setup to block based on the refferer string? The reason I ask is that the only thing I can think of that would be different between clicking the link and going directly is that when using the link you would be passing a referrer string to the server.

Hope this helps

Wullie,

You are a GENIUS! Excellent guess that left me sitting here thinking "Why the heck didn't I think of that?!". If I could give you more than one star I would.

You have absolutely made my day as the problem appears solved after some fiddling with the referral blacklists. I was this close --> <-- to uninstalling IIS and redoing the entire thing from scratch which, given the number of sites and services I have on this one server would have taken me the better part of an entire day.
