years ago i printed off some web design info it said that link colour changing was a big mistake.
I see what you mean even tek-tips change their link colour.
Just remember reading it off something!
but in reality a lot of Jakob Neilsen's stuff assumes that 90% of users are still in 1995 and have absolutely no idea that the world has moved on. (NN4 users)
I change all my links to suit the site design and providing you stick to some general principles and are consistent in your approach there should be no problem.
as deecee says use CSS, it's what it was designed for.

I know we can make recomendations that CSS is a better means of achieving the objective.
Sometimes though we can be guilty of forgetting that users of the forums may just want the simple GUI solution. Which is why I posted the above as an extra to the excellent CSS answer.
