I am working in Windows XP, SP2 on a Word 2003 doc with a hyperlink that I've added. The link is to another word doc that's in a shared network drive. The path looks like this: R:\helpdesk\Report_SubcontractsbyPlanPNL_100505.rtf

The problem is, the hyperlink works fine UNTIL I save the word doc. After saving & clicking the link, I get the following error message: "The address of this site is not valid. Check the address & try it again." I'm not sure why I'm encountering this error. Can somebody please help?

Take a look at the actual address in hyperlink properties. Word often convert relative addressing.

Thanks, Gerry. I checked the hyperlink properties, & word did convert it. I can correct it, but as soon as I save again, it converts back to to invalid address. I've tried it repeated times. Any other suggestions?

Hi Lotus14,

If you set a hyperlink base (File > Properties) to some unrelated path that should force Word to store it as absolute. It's a bit of a kludge but it should work (I think).

Enjoy,
Tony

Thanks, Tony. I just saved the reference doc to a different network drive and now the hyperlink works! I don't really understand why, but I'm happy. Thanks again for your help.

I believe I have found a better solution for this. Use the following formula (with your path) to create your hyperlinks;
=HYPERLINK("\\Server Name\Folder1\Folder2\folder3\File name.pdf","This is my link")
