Was just finishing up changing some names on a few dig sets when my Hyperterminal session showed -1 HWLCK=NULL
And after that I could get nothing on the screen. Port 1 on the hardwire TTY works fine so I was able to disable and re-enable the port to the modem. I also reset the modem, etc. I was able to dial into the modem at then escape (+++) to issue AT commands so the modem seems ok but its not talking to the switch. No setting relating to the TTY or modem were changed.

Any ideas?

depends on the modem, usually just need a power cycle.. and dyperterm can kill the port.. ld 37 stat enl tty x

Hey John.. I knew I could count on you to respond..
Never had a problem with Hyperterm before but I have seen some posts that said it could cause a disable.
The HWLCK message might have been partialy garbled.. I entered what I saw.

I did in fact power off/on the modem and also "enl tty 0" (before posting my query). It is showing enabled, but still nothing. I'll try ENL again in the AM from the hardline TTY. I might also try a spare TTY (2) on the modem. DO you think it is safe to pull the serial plug on the modem and plug in the spare while the switch is powered up?

Whoops.. It seemes that TTY 1 and 2 are different and that 0 is meant for a modem (with DIP switch for Baud rate).. never mind my idea!

put a nul between them and it will work.. and for the 1st question.. you can hot swap the serial ports from one pc to another.. i do it here at times and it never logs me off.. is this an 11? i hate those when it comes to a possible bad serial.. nothing like replacing a ssc for a open lead on one tty.. if it's on a paddle board.. those do die, sometimes you just need to dis ALL the ports on that card and reseat... carefull with that, it can and will ini the switch if you don't seat it firmly..

the device number is an interupt, spike the system clock and they tend to turn on a lot of red light

Well I am still messing with this problem. I carefully reloaded all the modem settings (after finally finding a serial cable) but still can't get anything. I am beginning to think that the modem has a problem. Its a Robotics 33 k so the settings in the FAQ do not match up 100%, but I think I have it set up right. Cant seem to get anything from Port 0 OR port 2 on the hardwire terminal.. I'll try that again next week or so.

Don't know what you mean by: " spike the system clock and they tend to turn on a lot of red light

On second try (after getting the settings right) I got the hardwire terminal to talk to the switch though both TTY 0 and TTY 2, so I focused next on the modem. After some effort I got the modem configured again and now all is working again.
And now that it is working I think I will trash the modem in favor of the more secure serial terminal server on the ethernet network.
