Here is a new one for me. A client of mine can get e-mail, ping websites, ftp through the browser etc, but cannot get on surf the Internet. I have disabled AV, the firewall, etc.etc. and still nothing. Any ideas of what it can be? We have done sypware check, checked for viruses, disabled any uneeded startup items etc. Help would be appreciated.

Nope. Just regular cable/dsl modem, and dsl connection.

Well I'm spent. If it were me I would change ports and cable anyways, but thats just me. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.

Earlier mention was made about using the Winsock fix. I would point out that if you are at SP2 level then the Winsock Fix is not appropriate and the SP2 alternative should be tried.

Did you ever try the Internet Explorer Fix?

Windows XP Internet Programs Cannot Connect to the Internet Through Broadband Connection

If Firefox uses the same Temporary Internet Files folder as IE (I have no knowledge of Firefox) then this may apply?

You receive a "page cannot be displayed" error message when you try to log on to a Web site by using Internet Explorer 6

The check lists in this article are worth following, especially about cleaning out Temp and Temporary Internet Files.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

linney,

I have a question. I am pretty sure I have used the Winsock Fix with an XP2 machine and had success. I am curious about what you mean when you said..."I would point out that if you are at SP2 level then the Winsock Fix is not appropriate and the SP2 alternative should be tried."

Thanks

Erik

erikhertzel,

"Bill Castner" sums it up well in his FAQ that I quoted.

WinXP Connectivity Issues
FAQ779-4625

It is a case of if WinsockFix.exe works, well all is well and good, but if it doesn't, then it may be more appropriate to try the built-in SP2 fix, just in case that works. It is like covering all bases, that is what I meant.

It is also appropriate to try rebuilding the TCP/IP service stack if the Winsock Fix doesn't fix the problem.

linney,

Thanks for that tip. I understand what the FAQ is saying. I appreciate your answering my question.

Let me take a look at some of these and see if I any of them work. I will post back when I detemine something. Thanks for posting.

Here's an update. The computer is now here at my office, and I am using just a regular DSL, nothing fancy. Got all the Windows Updates, and Office Updates. Rebooted, Internet works fine for about ten minutes, then quits, both in IE and Firefox. I can do nslookup, ping, ftp, e-mail etc. and that all works great. Any ideas what the deal is?

Just to add to the excitement, I installed a wireless NIC, and I get the same problem. I disabled the onboard NIC, and just told it to use the wireless and I get the same problem. No IE or Firefox, it says connecting to site xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and then it goes to page cannot be displayed.

You could run "HiJack This" and post the log here so others can see what is running on the machine and perhaps offer some suggestions.

Are there any clues in the Event Viewer?

A clean install and format is another consideration as a final solution.

I checked real well for spyware, with a-spy and there are no clues in the event viewer. We are trying to avoid doing a reload, but that might very well be what we need to do. If I dont see any other responses by Monday that work, I think we will reload.
