When I upload an .htaccess file that I create with NotePad, it of course wants to add the .txt extension. Generally when the upload is complete, I use the "rename" feature of my FTP program to remove the .txt.

However I use one hosting service that for whatever reason, will not show me files that start with a period (even though I DO have the ftp program set to show all files that start with a period). Therefore, I am unable to remove the .txt after the upload is complete.

So my question is, when I upload a file named as .htaccess.txt, will that still work as an .htaccess file? I am hoping that UNIX will automatically remove the .txt, but admittedly do not know.

Thanks for any feedback...

Thanks mbrooks for the info -- that was what I was concerned about. As I said, this particular server will not show file names that start with a period, therefore I cannot see it to do the rename. I'll re-upload the .htaccess file with a Macintosh FTP program (Mac's do not require that files have an extension), so that should solve the problem.

Note pad does not really require you to save it with the .txt extension either - when saving, do a 'save as' with 'all files' at the type.

One thing I love about these forums is learning something new ... thanks smah, in all the years I've been working with Windows, that has never occured to me!

Isn't it amazing what simple tricks we miss out on and how obvious it is when people explain it to us :)

Oh well, I suppose that is what this forum is all about. Nice that people can reply to threads like this in a pleasant manner. Other forums I know would treat questions like this with contempt.

Hurrah for the tek-tips community!!
