Our print server has been behaving strangely lately. Seems like one day, one printer will act up and another day it will be fine and a different printer will go screwy. No viruses on the server, but did see in the Task Manager that there were probably around 20+ HPBPRO.exe processes running and just as many HPBPOID.exe processes running.

Looking around on the net seems to be a lot of people complaining about these processes which relate to HP printers, but I haven't found any concrete solutions to this problem. Anyone experience problems with these services or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Silly question, but have you tried contacting HP support regarding this?

^ Yeah, the guy said I should just reinstall the driver......there are 50+ HP printers on the server. Sounded like a weak answer to me. There was also a thread in the HP forums that had been going on for a couple of years with no input from HP. Their solutions seemed more involved than reinstalling the drivers.

Sounds like you don't only have drivers installed but the associated management software that comes with it. Check to see if there is a mgmt application or service starting and disable it. It shouldn't interfere with processing your print jobs.

No only drivers are installed on this server. I just checked for the third time to make sure.

Below is one of a couple errors that we are seeing now. When a standard user tries to right-click on the network printer and select properties this error pops up.

Function address 0x371e8ba caused a protection fault. (exception code 0xc0000005). Some or all property page(s) may not be displayed.

c0...5 errors are common to all MS applications so this may have nothing to do with your printing issue. Does this error occur for all users, this one user, this one printer
Did you check add/remove programs, the services applet for any HP related apps/services?
Also check the registry for occurences of the two exes. This might also give you an indication of what services are calling these exe files

Okay well, I think I got this thing figured out. It appears my issue is the same as discussed in this HP forum and I was off on my original assumption.

There were tons of solutions in there. The one I tried that seemed to work was:

1. Reinstall the printer in order to use HP ORIGINAL drivers, without updating neither from Windows Update or HP website.
2. At the server, locate this folder:
C:\WINNT\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3 , and copy all its content.
3. In each client, locate the same folder and paste the content (not replacing the folder).

Not sure if it is necessary or not, but these were the steps I followed:
(1) deleted printer from server and reinstalled
(2) deleted all printers on the client
(3) rebooted
(4) did steps above
(5) rebooted
(6) reinstalled network printers on the client
