Just a NEWS for you; one of my friend has bought a HP notebook last month, and don't like VISTA, (( and more important it was not compatible with is accounting software )), We pass the saturday to remove VISTA and reinstall is own XP PRO, and her acounting program and others...

On the monday she call to ask some question the support line of HP.

What a surprise the online technician told her than to remove VISTA has void is Notebook warranty. wohhhh.

Pass the news.... HOW a software change can void a HARDWARE warranty if a hardware one month ago was fully sold and fully operate in XP mode, and now suppose the graphic card failed; IT WILL BE THE FAULT OF XP .... Please give us a break HP.

It is clear for us and all of mine HP is dead for me.

R.I.P. HP.

I've seen a few stories of a bunch of hardware vendors pulling this crap.

I can only assume that they are trying it to try and get people to stay on Vista.

I'd call back and press the support person and ask them exactly how a piece of software was going to damage the hardware. Then ask for there supervisor.

The recommended workaround, I suppose, is to Image the hard drive, before you install the new operating system, then you can re-instate any so called warranty conditions easily enough.

Good on you HP! Whatever happened to giving the customer what he wants, and needs?

did the computer come with Vista or XP?

Come on, if you buy anything new, then start changing it before the warranty period expires, of course the warranty becomes void. Your friend was sold a specific piece of equipment. You can't change a major part of it and expect the company to support you. It's the same for anything. Perhaps the individual concerned should have checked for compatibilty of software before buying a vista powered laptop. He/she could have downloaded the Vista compatability program to check.

This notebook was sold by Futureshop, and salemen was happy to sold everything , he don't look and check compatibility, and my friend was not a advised user.

Vista was the only operating system avalaible now...

I know that a software problem is 'never' waranty, but to reject a harrdware problem... it is discusting ...

So case close, just want to advise people of company bad politic.

So if I buy a piece of hardware with an operating system on it, and then install my own software (thereby changing it before the warranty period expires), is the warranty void?

No.

The OS has absolutely nothing to do with the hardware (if it fails). Tell HP to pound sand.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

The real reason is probably that the troubleshooting script is no longer correct, so they can't diagnose the problem [from whereever].

Or do HP simply mean they will not resolve the problem you have (you didn't state if it was a true hardware fault).

If it's a true hardware fault then fine they should be responsible. However if it is because a piece of software (drivers are software), then that's your issue.
If I was to install Linux on a Laptop supllied with XP / Vista and can't get the wireless card to work, is that HP's fault? No it's mine and my problem to solve.

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.
