i was given a hp printer 3820 and when i try to print it just shoots the paper out but it doesn't print anything the cartridges don't even move. its kind of loud i am not sure if that is because its old or if it broke. But when i try to print i saw the ink was low, now i was wondering if when this hp printer is low on ink if it just wont even move the ink cartridges to even try to print. My other printers that i have had will print even though it is low on ink it just wont look good though. i don't want buy ink and then have it not work and i just lost money. Please help, thanks a lot!!!!

Printers are so cheap these days (because they make their money on consumables), unless money is really tight I'd just buy a cheap new printer. HP is usually an excellent printer choice. I just bought an all-in-one OfficeJet5780 and am quite impressed with it, for around $100. There are models starting at around $39, but I'd stick w/ HP or Canon.

If you really want to try and repair the printer you have, on HP's website or the CD that came with the printer, there will be a "toolbox" feature that's a self-diagnostic.

There is also a forum here specifically for HP printers:

forum697

or peripherals

forum750

I would first post in the HP forum, then the peripheral forum if you don't get any responses. Best of luck.
