Having issue where laptop HD, fan were making alot of noise and shut down while playing java based online games -Updating the BIOS resolved noise issue but still having shut down issue - except now it shuts down while doing other things such as running spybot and ad-aware. At this point I believe it is an overheating issue. I've been researching the issue and what I read is to change the Heat sink assembly next - not sure if this will solve the problem but am willing to try. Wanted to post and see what you guys think. Also; need service manual to this model if anyone is aware of where I can get it; tried google no luck and or any handy software utilities that can possibly isolate temperature or hardware problem. Along with HP recommendations below are my troubleshootings steps. Thanks for all your help.

1. Updated BIOS to GE.M1.04
2. Downloaded sun java J2SE 1.4.2 version
3. Installed the latest version of DirectX9
4. Increased the Hardware acceleration of the display adapter
5. reinstalled java virtual machine
6. reinstalled the Internet Explorer 6 browser
7. Ran spybot and ad-aware
8. Reinstalled OS – Windows XP and SP1 – and java component -

Hmmm.. for heat issues, you could also try one of those deals that you set your laptop on top of, and it has extra fans moving extra air around your laptop, and keeping it frmo being directly ontop of another surface, thus increasing airflow in that way as well..
And, if you can't get an answer here, you might could try to contact someone at or . The guys at both of these seem to enjoy tearing into all sorts of things, and I'm sure they've tried some of this before, and my guess is someone at one of these locations could find someone to provide a manual of sorts...

Thanks for your response - Do you recommend any specific hardware? Read below.

Also. At this point I've ordered a new heat assembly from HP and will let you know how it goes.

Thanks,

I've come accross some reviews before, showing that some were effective, and some not. My suggestion is to search for "notebook cooling" or "laptop cooling" and if you just do that in a google search, choose "search within results" and enter "review". I have found that I can find at least a couple reviews for ANY product (practically) on the web just by searching that way via google. I came close to buying one for my brother before, but don't recall the name of it. If you want to look at specific sites, here are a couple you could try searching on:

I looked really quick, and found this review:
I don't necessarily endorse this site overall, as I have no knowledge of whose site it is, but the reviews there seem consistant with others. The results look accurate, so that would be a good guess.
It also depends upon your usage as to what would be best. From the reviews I read about a year ago, I would say that as long as the cooler device lifts the laptop up a little off of a flat surface, and has 2 fans +, then you will see some cooling improvement. You could also check around places such as , , to see what prices are available. If I remember correctly, you'll end up paying at least $25-30 for a decent one. Though, if you have the time, parts, and some ability, you could probably build your own pretty cheap - just depends, b/c it's not a terribly high-tech product.. [wink] Basically, you are just lifting the laptop off of a surface to allow better airflow, then increasing the airflow by introducing external fan(s).

One last thing to consider (I would think) is how are the fans located.. some don't really have any protection, but the fans are more or less just sticking out the bottom of the devise. Also, whether you typically just have the laptop sitting in your lap or on a flat surface. Some of these could be difficult at times to use if you use in your lap. Most, if not all, should work fine on a flat surface, but some will fare better than others if you have it in your lap, or some other non-flat surface.

Went ahead and changed the heat sink assembly - the laptop seems to be working fine for now. Thanks for all the info.
