I'm having intermitment sound problems with my hp pavilion laptop using xp pro ... tried newest drivers from microsoft and hp for sound card ... no luck ... any ideas?

Try the DXdiag tool by typing dxdiag in the Start Run box see how your sound behaves in that. After that, use the More Help button to to enter the Sound Troubleshooter.

How long have you been having this problem and can you describe it in more detail?

Sound skips. Does it during Windows Welcome jingle, playing CD, playing sound files previously stored on HD. Improved for 10 minutes after disabling auto-protect (Norton AV Corporate Edition not connected to corp network), but returned like an unwelcome relative after cycling NAV back on then back off again. Viewing Task Manager, I see WLANSTA, csrss, ONETOUCH, wuauclt, taskmgr, explorer with occasional activity.

Further... Machine had uninterrupted sound when operated by XP Home as shipped. Problem developed some time after corporate IT admin "upgraded" with XP Pro so he could download corp software off his network. With XP Pro, he also installed Office Pro and NAV Corp. I was warned that there would be no driver for viewing DVDs with the new OS. That turned out to be true: XP Pro caused loss of DVD read/display function. I then found a DVD driver from the Web for the Toshiba combo drive in my unit which works, but with interrupted sound and video symptoms. I'm thinking, maybe it's the DVD driver, but how would that cause the Windows Welcome jingle to skip??

How much RAM have you got?

Is anything using excessive CPU in the Task Manager Processes list?

Have you updated DirectX and Windows Media Player or tried reducing sound or video acceleration just a little?

Some general things to try.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

In safe mode we can't get ANY sound to play ... seems like safe mode doesn't load the sound drivers at all ... does that seem correct?

When we used the dxdiag tool all tabs and test seemed normal and the funny thing was all the sounds played normally with no interuptions ... why would the sounds play ok from this tool, yet windows start up sounds and media player have problems?
