I have a HP Laserjet 5m printer with an internal JetDirect card and I am trying to configure it onto my network by connecting the printer directly to my wired router. I have spoken to Linksys, the manufacturer of my router and they have suggested to configure the printer to use the following settings:

IP address 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1

Preferred / Primary DNS 194.168.4.100
Alternate / Secondary DNS 194.168.8.100

I tried to configure the printer from a laptop by adding a local printer with a TCP/IP configuration adding the above details but that didn't seem to work. Linksys support says that I need to do this from the actual printer but there are no options to do this. There are option for CFG configuration and TCP/IP etc but its just a Yes or a No.

Has anyone had experience with setting up one of these printers on a XP Workgroup connected directly to a wired router?

Thanks
Tony

Did you install the jet direct software on the clients? If so, it should find the printer on the network. You should use the default ip address already assigned to the printer. Ususally when you add the printer you select local printer and the network port assigned by the software. You can ususally print out the network settings from the printer menu, but you shouldn't need it if you install the software and the printer properly.

If you answer Yes to TCP/IP config, you should get another subset of menus which configure the IP Address information. The configuration should ask you bit by bit to input the IP Address so for example IP 1 would be 192, IP 2 would be 168 etc....

I doubt JedAdmin would work... doesn't JetAdmin require IPX? Linksys routers do not support IPX.

Both the Linksys and HP websites show that you should be able to use the printer using DHCP. However, the advice you received from Linksys is suggesting you assign a static IP address (192.168.1.5) to the printer.

I haven't used a 5m with a wired router but I have attached one to our networks at work (where we don't use DHCP). It was a long time ago and I can't remember how I set a static IP address on the printer so I looked it up again in the JetDirect manual.

From the JetDirect manual it looks like you need to choose 'YES' to 'CFG' so you can get to the 'CFG TCP/IP' setting and change it from the default 'YES' (i.e. get IP address automatically using DHCP) to 'NO' (so you can set the IP address to 192.168.1.5 manually).

The JetDirect manual can be downloaded from here:

Once you've set a static IP address on the printer then you can use HP's wizard to 'find' the printer automatically or set it up on the XP workstations using a standard IP port.

Instructions for setting up the printer using a standard TCP/IP port in XP can be found here:

HP's 'Install Network Printer Wizard' can be downloaded from here:

HP's Web JetAdmin (which can use TCP/IP or IPX/SPX) might be overkill to use for a single printer. The overview of HP's 'Web JetAdmin' software (which can use TCP/IP and/or IPX/SPX) can be viewed here:

and the 'Web JetAdmin' software itself can be downloaded from here:

Hope this helps...

Thanks guys, I will try your suggestions over the next few days
