I need to go to hyper terminal so I can check the IP address of a Nortel Call Pilot voicemail, I have a Rs232 connection with USB at the other end. My laptop does not seem to allow this in Program, how do I find hyper terminal?

Also I have 2 USB connection on the left of my laptop, how do I determine which is which Comm1, Comm3 and or where is Comm1 or Comm3?

Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Hyper Terminal.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

If its not there you can try the direct path:
"C:\Program Files\Windows NT\hypertrm.exe"

Any clues about COM Ports in these?

What's using my COM Ports?

Overview of the COMDisable Tool

See if these intructions help?

Open Device Manager.

Click on + (Ports COM + LPT) and expand list.

Right-click on Communication Port (COM1) and select Properties.

Click on Port Settings tab.

Click on Advanced button.

Use the Com Port setting "Down Arrow" to expand list of Com Ports.

You should have COM1 - COM256 listed.

This allows you to change the port number that is assigned to the port. For example, if you have three modems connected to COM1, COM2 and COM3, and you want them all to use COM3, change this setting to COM3 for ports COM1 and COM2. This will force each modem to use COM3.

See if these lead anywhere?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\SERIALCOMM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Ports

Search the Registry for COMn (n = number) and see what else you can turn up.

Quite impressed, thank you.

I will check this out.

Just FYI, if you want to upgrade to Hyperterm PE is now try before you buy. Older versions (6.3 and maybe 6.4)used to be free for personal use.

Most people spend their time on the "urgent" rather than on the "important."
