Call me cheap, but I've got this OLD printer that still works wonderfully, EXCEPT that HP never wrote an updated driver for anything past Win98. It worked fine in Win 2000 but prints "faded" since upgrading to WinXP Pro.

I've checked FAQ's and searched on topic, but found no help. Does anyone know of a way to trick WinXP to play nice with an old printer?

Thank you! (I hate to get rid of something that works great, you know?)

I'm not saying it isn't an XP driver issue, but are you sure that it isn't a physical problem? Does this happen on every printout, or only from certain applications? How does a test page print? Have you tried swapping the toner cartridge?

Matt J.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

I've never heard of an OS causing a printer to print "faded". My guess is that at the same time you upgraded to XP th eprinter either A) had a "mechanical" problem, or B) needs a new toner.

Try plugging the printer into another computer to see if you have the same issue.

What model is it? WinXP has many pages of HP printer drivers (I just installed my LaserJetIII).

Well, color me surprised! Since the "faded" print began as soon as I got my new WinXP laptop, I figured it was a driver incompatibility.

Because of your responses, I just dug out the old computer and printed from it. Result: "faded" print. (Strange that it doesn't display the "low toner" error, though.)

Sorry to have taken up your time, but I was mentally hung up on a driver issue.......thanks for shaking it out of my head!
