It could very vell be a formatter board problem. What comes to my mind is that there is a problem with the formatter board that is damaging your firmware dimm. I would suggest replacing both the firmware and the formatter at the same time. If your formatter has damaged the firmware, it could damage a new formatter if it's brought over. I have seen it happen.
As a second issue, I have a question. Is the printer plugged into a surge protector? I have a customer that we've had to replace the firmware in his HP numerous times because it was on a surge protector. Laser Printers like to draw more power than a surge protector likes to let through, and sometimes this does damage the firmware.
