Hi all,

I have IBM aptiva , PentIII 486 Mhz processor. I want to upgrade my system to the latest Pent4 2.0 Ghz. Is it possible target to do? I am a programmer, so I wouldnt have any clue on how to do that!

Is it just matter of changing the chip? Or changing the whole mother board?

Can someone advice me regards!!! I have not got classic tutorial on Internet!

Uhhh first of all, I think you may be mis-interpriting some stuff. I have yet to see a 486mhz preocessor. Second, if it is a 486 processor running at somewhere in the range of 33-66mhz you may have some difficulty upgrading. You will definatly need a new motherboard to do that big of a change. It may have older ISA cards (cards where the connector is long) which will not work in almost all new systems. The other thing to worry about is that the system may be AT ( you can tell by looking at the power connectors running from the PSU to the motherbaord. 1 big one is ATX and two smaller ones is AT). Every new board uses ATX and if your old computer uses AT you may also need a new case. If there is a local computer store bring your computer in and ask them exactly what you would need to upgrade to a p4 2 gig.

The difference between a Pentium II/III and the Pentium 4 [IV] is great. The Pentium II/III was available as a Slot 1/Slot 2 module or a Socket 370 chip. The Pentium 4 is available as a Socket 423 or a Socket 478. The 3-digit numbers are the number of pins protruding from the chip. So a Pentium 4 will need a new motherboard and it also uses newer memory.

Most of the 'brands' cases and motherboards are made to a particular design [as a 'set', so to speak] and it is difficult to get after-market boards to fit the cases.

I think what everyone is trying to say is an upgrade to P4 on your system is not cost effective.
You will need to buy a new base unit. Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.
