I have some webpages and most of them are registered/hosted with register.com. I can change my server IP or DNS without any problem.

Recently, I had a new domain name registered by planetdomain. I don't know how to make my domain name point to my server which I setup by myself with a static IP. They only allow me to modify the DNS.

Can someone help?

Can you clarify a little? Explain exactly what you are trying to accomplish?
When you registered the domain you must have been asked for the primary and secondary domain name servers? Now you need to add that domain to the domain name servers with an entry pointing to the ip address you wanted.

jsauce is correct. We need more info. I deal with register.com, and I know what you're talking about with changing the dns and such. Is it possible that planetdomain doesn't allow it, or isn't making it as simple as using register?

Do you mean point a DNS record at your server for mail or web etc, or do you mean make your own DNS server authorative for the domain?

Like I said, I can change DNS and IP for my domain name in register.com. In planetdomain, I can only modify DNS and no place for me to put IP. My question is how can I have my domain name and IP to be put in a DNS?

My server is a linux box and I have several IPs from my ISP. I don't have my own DNS setup with my linux box. I use the DNS provided from my ISP.

If I understand you correctly, Planetdomain hold your domain name and their DNS servers are authorative for that domain. What you want to do is to be able to create DNS records to point to your server. For example, you may want to create an MX record for email or a

http://www record

for your web site. Yes?

If this is the case, a quick look at

http://www.planetdomain.com

shows that there is an option to manage your DNS, under 'Manage Domain > Modify DNS Details'. Is this what you are after? I don't know what options this gives you as it requires a Member Login username and password.

If this doesn't allow you to add any DNS records then you may have to speak to Planetdomain to see what you actually get. It may be that they only register domain names and but don't host DNS for them. In that case you would need to arrange DNS hosting and point the domain at some other DNS servers that you can manage.

What domain name servers did you use when setting up your previous domains atregister.com? What domain name servers did you use when setting up your domain at planetdomain? If you used your isps, then you need to inform your isp that you have setup the domains to point to ips in their network. They then need to add thr forward and reverse zones for your domain to their dns records. I personally prefer hosting my own dns in this case but its not needed. The information you provide when you registered, namely the dns needs to be correct. However it needs to be nameservers you have access to in someway, either by hosting them yourself, or someone else hosting them for you. How else would you be able to create subdomains if you wanted to? This is the best reason for hosting it yourself or using your isp for it, because you can create all the subdomains you want under that domain, on your network.

I used their DNS servers from register.com. I also used planetdomain's DNS servers either. It sounds I need to use my ISP's DNS servers. I don't want to setup my own DNS.

I will try to talk to my ISP and get all information from them. Right now, I only have three IPs of DNS servers from my ISP.

You will need your own name server in order to do that. If you don't have one you can always use a free DNS service like

http://www.dnspark.com.

They need to be more clear, they meant any nameserver will do as long as someone can add the entries. I don't know if you knew that and that's why you posted? But basically you can run your own, use your isps or yes use a free service.

But here is my problem, when you signed up didn't they ask you for nameservers? Are they not like the internic, they register domains? You cannot register a domain without two nameservers already setup to add the domain to? When did this change? Right now if you do a whois on your domain, it should list the nameservers it is using, I'll bet they have it entered on their nameservers temporarily. I'd personally not use that service anymore they are going to be such a pain about it.

Thank you for you info.

Right now, my domain name is in public now. I called my ISP and gave him my domain name and the IP, then he gave me the DNS server names and IPs. I went to planetdomain and put the DNS server names and IPs. After about 24 hours, it is working now!
