I got a computer a with a SCSI hard drive in it, and I want to put Windows 2000 on this machine. I have formated and installed operating systems on many machines, but do not know how to work with a SCSI drive. I do not even see it in the BIOS. If any one can tell me how to work whith these drives I would really appreaciate it.

You won't see it in the BIOS. Try fdisk and see if it is there.

You probably need to enable the SCSI BIOS. This is additional code that allows the hard drives to be seen and booted from.

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Thank You i appreiacte your responce to this matter. How would I find what that code is, and how to applie it. Is there somewhere I can go to find out how to load an opperating system on a SCIS drive.
Thank You

There will be an option somewhere in the BIOS setup called "Boot From" and you can select IDE or SCSI. Other than that, you just use them like any IDE harddrive.

The system BIOS doesn't detect the SCSI drive, just as it wouldn't detect an IDE drive if it were on a PCI IDE card.

Enable SCSI bios is a choice with a setup disk you get with the adapter. Or possibly a jumper on the adapter.
What kind of adapter are you using?

Once SCSI BIOS is active and the drives are seen, installation of the OS is exactly the same as for other drives. fdisk, format, etc.

Thank You I think this will help. I really appreciate everyones help.

First you must enable boot from SCSI in your bios.
The you must invoke the SCSI bios. This normally gets done at boot time. Look for a message that says press CTRL and another key.
What kind of scsi controller do you have ??
If you get into the Bios of the SCSI cont. you should eb able to see the HD. If you can see it you should format it first. Then re-boot with Windows 2000.

If you can't see the drive in the SCSI Bios then check you Jumper setting on the HD.

In older BIOS's you will not see the SCSI option. You should see a way to get into the SCSI adapter at boot up. For example an Adaptec tells you to hit Ctrl A to enter it's setup.

If you setup the SCSI adapter correctly it will boot from the SCSI device even though the BIOS of the motherboard does not show it. Make sure the ID setting on the HDD is 0 or 1. Most systems will not boot from a HDD set to other ID settings.
