I want to place an image of a ship on my home page, but that image should be a watermark(a still image, should not with text scroll)my background color is dark Brown(#663333)
& i am using Dreamweaver 3 as my html editor. I have tried by converting image in to Grayscale image through Adobe Photoshop 5.5 But its still looking very bright. the image must be grey&black image. Please send me any solution regarding this (if any javascript coding for watermarking an image).

What I usually do for Watermarks is take fireworks (which is really handy with Dreamweaver) and descrease the objects transparency. This gives the "background/watermark" look to it. Not sure about photoshop though. Check for transparencies in adobe help.B-)

There are many ways that you can change the brightness of an image in Photoshop 5.5. The easiest is to select the Adjust > Brightness/Contrast menu option. Drop down the brightness and contrast until the image looks right. For more control use the Adjust > Levels option - this allows you to make very fine adjustments to the tonal range.

Of course photoshop will allow you to adjust the transparency of the image as suggested by Techman007. Just make sure that the image is not on the background layer - if it is rename the layer and then in the layers palette (with the layer selected) adjust the opacity value (up the top of the palette).

Or use a combination of these techniques!
