Whenever I open a document in Word I get the message "Requesting virus scan" at the bottom of the screen and the document will not open until this is done. How do I turn this off? I tried setting the Macro security level to low but it did not help. I am running Windows 98 SE and Office 2000. Thanks.

It's not macro security that's doing it.

Close Word.

Try looking in the STARTUP folder on your hard drive. It'll be the one under your Office folders. See if there's anything in there. Remove any files, at least temporarily.

If that doesn't work, (again with Word closed) try renaming your normal.dot file to abnormal.dot. Perhaps there's some installed code in it.

Thanks dreamboat. I tried your suggestions and niether one worked. It is driving me crazy. Any other suggestions?

This is a setting in the virus scan software (Norton or McAffee). Try looking at the settings there.

You guys are good but I already did that. I had Nortons installed at one time but not now. In Macro security on the Security tab it says "Virus Scanner(s) installed". Just as a side note I reinstalled Office last night and it still is giving me the message so it may be remnants of Mcafee or Notrons somewhere.

Take step 5 of my troubleshooter, hchman:

Just as an FYI: Reinstalling Office often does not help because the registry settings remain behind and are NOT overwritten by a reinstall. If you ever want to reinstall Office, first uninstall, then use Eraser, then reinstall.

I don't know if any of that stuff works but this solves the problem. File loading that used to hang, now hangs ten.

Regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Officeav.dll"

It's right there in Q243579

(you'll have to type or "swipe-paste" the URL - Tek-Tips is parsing the semicolon in the address)
