How to test if Win NT Server isPDC..

Hi There,

Inherited a Win NT server there and need to know if it is a Primary Domain Controller, as I have some software to install which requires the stand alone Sever configuration.

Here comes the stupid question...

How can I test this as NT Server is already loaded up ? I want to be sure before I do a reinstall to change it.

A couple of ways to do this.

1) at the cntrl alt del screen, so you get a domain to log into and if so then do you get a choice of domain or local machine?

2) go into server manager, this will tell you what the servers role is, PDC, BDC or Stand Alone

Type at DOS prompt:

net accounts

it will tell you what role your NT server is.

Many thanks for that, I have ascertained it is a PDC so I need to re-install.

Another problem has cropped up though on rebooting for setup. The install screen searches for Mass Storage devices and finds no hard disks then in the next screen halts the installation cause of it. How can I identify the harddisk that is being used, it is a Dell Power Edge 2550 server.

You need to know what array controller you are using and then use the F6 key during the text protion of the install to load that driver, once that is done you will be able to see the disks.

Did you get any of the Dell CD's with the server?? If so hopefully one of them is the Dell version of Compaq SmartStart, which will assist you in the build of the serevr.

I got a Compaq Prolient and had the same problem.

You can get all you need from the compaq sites, just search from any engine 'compaq smartstart' and you will get a number of sites back.

A second option,... add an extra IDE drive which will get you started and allow you to install the Raid/Scsi drivers after installing the op-sys and using Array config.

Oh, you also need the compaq config disks to setup the bios as Compaq's are usually different from 'clone' systems.
