I installed the backend server first. It installed the OWA autotically on this server, either I missed the option to deselect OWA or there is no option. Anyway, now I have a frontend server installed and it has OWA. Under system manager, it shows both servers running HTTP protocol.

Is there a way to disable OWA on the backend server?

From your suggestion, when I stop the exchange virtual server on the back-end server, the front-end server will not work. After the logon screen, it displays "HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable"

I want OWA to run on the front-end server, but not the back-end server. Am I making any sense?

They need to work together. The front end serves the back end's OWA. You need OWA installed on both machines to use OWA via the front end.

Ok, thanks. Does ssl slow it down significantly? Even if I open up the OWA on the front-end itself, it seems slow. The CA is on the front-end right now.

The certificate goes on the front end server. Communication between the front and back are supported in Html only. If you want to encrypt between the front and back, use IPSEC.
