I acheived this once before but have completely forgotten how to do it.

Anyone out there remember?

Cheers.

Open your registry and find the key below.
Create a new DWORD (or String on Windows 98 and Me) value, or modify the existing value called 'PaintDesktopVersion' set the value to equal '1' to display the version.

Exit the registry, you may need to restart for the change to take effect.

Note: The Windows version may be hidden behind the taskbar when you have Active Desktop enabled. If this is the case disable Active Desktop to view the label.

Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
Value Name: PaintDesktopVersion
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disable, 1 = enable)

Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. We cannot guarantee that problems resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved. Use the information provided at your own risk.

This may not provide the information in detail but click Start->Control Panel->System and it's on the opening General tab.

Where's the ANY key!!!

Get this program while it is still free, it has all the tweaks you need without entering the Registry.
