We are in need of keeping some new tapes in the same new volume pool, even after the images on the tapes expire. Normally these would go back to the Scratch pool that is titled Scratch, but we would like to prevent this, as these tapes are specially labeled for this particular volume pool. How can we make Netbackup recognize that these tapes should go in to this other pool?

Thanks!

I think the key is to set up barcode rules. Does anyone have experience with this?

i'm sure barcode rules only kick in when tapes are removed and reinserted. Pre 4.5, tapes would stay in current pool indefinitely. Scratch pool facility only partly works in 4.5 anyway (can't speak for version 5) so i would personally set up a script to (maybe couple times a day or whenever) take some output from the available_media script and move the tapes back into that pool.

Since the 3.1.1 days - (i don't use the partially functional scratch feature at all) have scripts that go thru all pools that have expired tapes and move them back to scratch pool. This is run couple of times a day and works a treat

Tapes don't move back in to the scratch pool once expired in 4.5 that is one of the new features of 5. That is also an option which you can switch.

This is from the Release Notes for 4.5 FP3
Expired tapes are now returned to the Media Manager scratch pool
Previously, if a scratch pool is configured, Media Manager moves volumes from the
scratch pool to any other pools that do not have volumes available. Now, Media
Manager also returns any expired media back to the scratch volume pool
automatically. The automatic behavior of returning media to the scratch pool can be
disabled in the Media Manager configuration file.

The return tapes to scratch pool feature is enabled and disabled by an entry in the
vm.conf file.
RETURN_UNASSIGNED_MEDIA_TO_SCRATCH_POOL = YES | NO
If no vm.conf file exists, the return expired tapes to scratch pool feature is enabled. To
disable it, you must create a vm.conf file, add the appropriate entry, and set it to no.

It would seem that I was given duff information from big V. Sorry, but at least I have learnt something usefull

Thanks Stumpr! I can only disable the scratch pool rules for all volume pools correct? Not just one?

What do you think about the barcode rules? Will these be overridden by the scratch pool rules as designated by the vm.conf entry (or lack of vm.conf file)?

If you use barcode rules, this will not be overwritten by the Scratch Pool.
