My project start date is set to 6/5/06 however when I select print preview the gant chart start date is 1/1/06. How can I force the gant chart to start with the same date as the project start date.

How to set the start date of the gant chart for printing

I'm not sure why Project is choosing that particular start date ... but the quick workaround to your problem is fairly easy:
From the Print Preview display, click on the "Print" button and, in the the Print window that appears, go to the lower left corner, select the Start date you want and then click on the "Preview" button just beneath the dates. You should see the display start Date that you want.
