How to set CD-R write speed? 1

Hi everyone!

My cd writer seems to have trouble reading the write speed information from certain CD-R discs, so it burns those CDs at lower speed, although those discs are up to much higher speeds, actually. So my burner can do 24x, but does 12x.
I would like to know if there is a way to set the CD write speed to a fixed value (using Nero or something else), maybe on system level (windows), application independent.

If you set your write speed to Auto then it is up to the device that is delevering the data like a cd-rom drive or hard-disk at which speed the cd is burned.
If the data transfer is too low than the writer will switch back to a speed that is in line with the data transfer speed from your cd-rom drive of hard-disk.

Hi Kocky,

that's exactly my problem. I do not want to let the CD burner decide at which speed it goes. Data delivery speed is not a problem. It's the CD-R discs with faulty write speed signatures which make my burner believe that the maximum CD write speed is, for example, 12x. (Package says 52x). So the burner goes at 12x and there seems to be no way to change that.
Any ideas?

Does it always go at 12x with any media or only with these ones. And how are you so sure that it is not a data transfer speed problem ? If your copying from a cd-rom device than you will never get the 52x write speed. When you are recording from a hard-disk you might get that high speed. The speed the manufactures write on their boxes can only be achieved under optimal conditions. So the transfer rate is at max and constant and the burner is writing at the inner circle of the cd. It can never write 52x on the outer edges of the cd because then your cd-drive would explode because of the high velocity.

Hi Kocky,

My drive can go at 24 max. And I usually burn CDs at this rate. I know that it is no transfer speed problem because Nero sets the maximum speed (in this case12x) *before* it even starts burning, and the source files are on the hard disk. It does this as soon as I insert a blank media. And, yes, the problem does only occur with certain brands. So I could just cope with it and buy other ones next time. But unfortunately I have bought 100 pieces
Anyway I know that Nero won't let me set the write speed to something higher than what Nero *thinks* is the maximum speed for the media. So that's why I actually wanted to know, if I can do something about it at driver or system level.

Have you tried setting the speed in the device properties? My Pioneer will offer a range of speeds including automatic.

What brand of CD-Writer do you have? Some cheap or generic brands give you little control over "manually setting" the write speed. Whether you can manually set it or not is up to the hardware itself, not necessarily the software.

In Nero, try this:
1) Click the 'CD-Recorder' Menu
2) Select 'Choose Recorder...' (make sure the burner is selected)
3) Click on the 'Options' tab
4) Remove the checkmark from the 'Optimum Writespeed Control enabled' box

If you don't see the option in step 4, or it's greyed out, then your cd-writer didn't leave it open for you to decide. If that's the case, your only real option in the future is to make sure you buy media that you know will work properly with your drive. Or if you really need a solution, you can try upgrading the firmware for your drive out at the manufacturer's website (though this can prove to be a waste of your time).
