Windows 2000 Server SP4

hi, i as tasked to restore a files from a tape whose catalog, for lack of a better term, is no longer on the server. with Windows Backup the catalog can be easily recreated (or read from tape) from the menu in order to proceed with restoring file/s.

how is it done the arcserve way of recreating the tape catalog? i tried the scan and it just scanned such that when i use the restore wizard i can't select which files to restore. i noticed merge but what does it do? will it erase my current catalogs or "merge" the tape's catalog with my existing catalogs?

A merge will do the following:
- check the tape for available *.cat files (catalog files)
- restore all *.cat files into the ARCserve temp directory
- read all catalog information into the database using the mergecat.exe utility

After merging the tape contents backup into the database you can restore data using the restore by backup media option. the merge operation is finished when the mergecat process on the server is gone.

catalog information will be added to the database, it will not overwrite any exisiting data.
