I have a package which runs on SQL/Server 7. We just installed our 1st SQL Server/2000 customer. No problem with backing up our startup database from SQL/7 and restoring it on the customers new SQL/2000.

After assisting customer with entering his startup entries, I backed up the customer's SQL/2000 database. The problem came when I tried to restore it on my SQL/7 database.

Any ideas? Is my small shop going to have to maintain both SQL/7 and SQL/2000 in order to swap databases with these customers?

SQL 2000 backups are not compatible with SQL 7. Database files are not backward compatible, either. You'll have to have both SQL 7 and 2000 installed or use another transfer method.

On SQL 2000, you can script the databases and copy the data to files via BCP or DTS. Then run the script(s) to create the database on SQL 7 and import data.

You can use DTS to transfer databases if you can link the servers or connect to both at the same time. However, this is usually not an option with clients. Terry L. Broadbent - DBA
